Ricky’s the latest subject of our Hip Motherf!@#ers spotlight, and he’s my type of guy.
On first take, you might mistake him for a grown up douchebag. But Ricky Powell’s a fly guy. He’s got connections with serious fame and it’s been that way since the 80s. Cindy Crawford met him once in a womens’ bathroom while he was working as a bus boy, and Ricky snapped an iconic image of the lady before she was model famous.
Also in the 80s, the Beastie Boys took him in as one of their own, making Ricky not only their photographer but also making him the “unofficial fourth Beastie Boy.” The dude has been scooting around New York City for decades, donning his slippery sense of style and snapping iconic photos of NY’s early hip hop party scene.
If you find Ricky in the street, you might catch an earful of his handheld transistor radio tuned to NYC’s Jazz 88.3 FM. He says it mellows him out. He hits on everyone, and he’s tight with Central Park’s squirrels. Strolling around the West Village in his slightly askew baseball cap, Ricky also sneers the word “bitch” often.
Especially when no one’s around.
