Brooklyn label Fifth Wall pushes atmospheric but danceable techno.
We like to put the words house and techno in the same sentence, but the two sounds are very different in their aim. Still, they’re often paired because they share similar tempo and a four on the floor beat.
While one embodies the harsh, inhuman drive of a machine, the other uses machines to create an inviting, warm aura. Techno fans revel in the anti-soul feel of the music, going nuts as soon as the overblown bass cannon begins its assault. But this tech tune is different.
Leeds based Unklone combines dark & light with “Untitled (Deaf).” Though it has all the assault of techno, the atmosphere of the first few bars doesn’t make me feel like I’m alone on a moon base. Rather, it’s a searching feeling, like someone who is about to come to a conclusion. I wasn’t pushed away. I could descend into it with all of my emotional, homo sapiens sapiens brain.
Or maybe it’s all darkness. Not much is known about the anonymous Unklone.
You tell me.
