It’s one thing to string a dozen tracks together in Ableton and call it a mix but it’s another entirely to play those tracks live, reacting to the ebb and flow of the crowd and injecting reoccurring sounds with MIDI controllers throughout.
In a recent set at London’s Village Underground–a party celebrating 30 years of sound innovators R&S Records–Paula Temple performs 50 minutes of techno dystopia, playing her peers’ music as well as her own, pleasantly disorienting the audience with an ambiguous cyclone of play buttons and improvisation.

Temple achieves an intentionally thick ambience throughout, with ever-present pads and low hums in the night that fade as quickly as they materialize.
