Samo Sound Boy knows a thing or two about throwing parties in LA, drawing curious onlookers to his label, Body High, by mirroring the city itself. Clip-art skulls, gold crowns, lipstick and palm trees conjure visions of gangland royalty, oversexed socialites and beach weather, while Samo’s latest tracks, “Open” and “Give Up” (with Floyd Campbell) capture the sheer scale of the city.
There’s magic in the space between, and much like a long drive down the highway, the lengthy, dancefloor minded “Open” is a quest. A set of alternating, eighth note chimes go up and down octaves throughout the song, creating a zig-zagging feeling that gives the track a lot of movement. And, sprinkled sparingly, echoing wind instruments (synthetic of course) add flickers of curiosity to the end of each chapter. Some tracks sound like EPs in themselves, but “Open” isn’t one of them.
It just took its time.
Open/Divine out March 18th on Body High (digital and 12″)
