For the Englishman, Boston is a long way from home. And depending on the person, travel can conjure mixed feelings in the belly. One of those feelings is excitement! But secretly, quietly, we wage an inner battle when we step into the unknown. On Wednesday, Vynehall will be doing what he loves, so I’m not sure if he can relate to the belly dissonance I describe, but Music for the Uninvited captures the feeling.
There were two tracks that stuck out when I listened to Vynehall’s mini album and they both use ultra fine sounds to convey their concepts. “Be Brave Clench Fists” illustrates a story, building in intensity all the way to the end, like someone walking toward a confrontation and Vynehall motivating them to do it. Amidst the tension, rising synthesizers inject enough mystery to keep me hypnotized and listening.
But it was the strings from “Inside the Deku Tree” that initially drew me. The track references a game which many people grew up with, throwing my nostalgia into hyperdrive and placing a warm pile of fuzzies in the passenger’s seat. Despite the bittersweetness, the second set of strings have a way of saying, “Chin up!”
And cool out.
Music for the Uninvited is out now.
